How Many Types of LED Light Bulbs Are There?

LED light bulbs can be categorized based on the characteristics of their light-emitting surfaces, and the half-value angle can be used to estimate the circular light intensity distribution. There are three categories based on the light intensity angle distribution:

Highly Directional

These are typically pointed epoxy-encapsulated or metal reflector-encapsulated LEDs without scattering agents. They have a half-value angle of 5° to 20° or even smaller and are highly directional, suitable for local illumination or for use in combination with light detectors in automated detection systems.

Standard Type

Typically used as indicator lights, with a half-value angle of 20° to 45°.

Diffuse Type

These are indicator lights with a larger viewing angle, with a half-value angle of 45° to 90° or even larger. They have a larger amount of scattering agent. According to the characteristics of the light-emitting surface of the LED, they can be categorized as circular, square, rectangular, flat light tubes, side-view tubes, and surface-mounted miniature tubes. 

Circular lights are divided into φ2mm, φ4.4mm, φ5mm, φ8mm, φ10mm, and φ20mm. In foreign markets, φ3mm LEDs are often referred to as T-1; φ5mm LEDs are referred to as T-1 (3/4); and φ4.4mm LEDs are referred to as T-1 (1/4).
